I wish I had read this years ago. I never really appreciated the ability to read and write. I don't even know if I would have had the determination to learn under such obstacles.

I never knew the horrors of slavery until reading this book. It appalls me to learn that people who claim to live a spiritual life caused the suffering of a whole class of people. Thank-you Frederick Douglass for writing your story.
The eloquence with which Douglass delivers the sad events of his earlier life as a slave is superb, the rhetoric planned and packed with emotion. Thus the "Narrative" remains one of the greatest--albeit haunting-- examples of autobiography ever penned by an American writer. Douglass' words don't only speak to the intellect, they reach out and shake the soul.
